PST Changes on Home Services
March 23, 2017

The Saskatchewan government released the new budget on March 22. Within this budget, it was announced that home construction and home services will no longer be PST exempt effective April 1st, 2017.

If a renovation or service contract is signed off before April 1, it will be considered PST exempt. Change orders after April 1st of up to 10% will be PST exempt as well. Anything over 10% will be subject to 6% PST.

We are committed to working hard over the next week to complete your furnace and air conditioning installation contracts and your plumbing, heating, and electrical repairs by March 31, 2017. We are also encouraging homeowners who are thinking about renovating to finalize their contracts by March 31 in order to save this 6% charge on their projects.

This is the week for home services! Give us a call or book your appointment online and we will get you taken care of right away!

Amana & Goodman Gas Furnaces
September 11, 2015

Saskatoon winters are tough! At Centennial 360 we sell furnaces (and air conditioners) that survive Saskatoon winters. That’s why we carry Goodman & Amana brand furnaces. It might come as a surprise to you that the Amana Goodman group along with their parent company, Daiken, is the world’s largest Furnace and Air Conditioning manufacturer! Goodman and Amana are easily comparable to Lennox, Carrier, Bryant and Trane furnaces, but have become industry leaders because of their focus on engineering the best product possible.
Goodman and Amana Furnace Saskatoon

Highly Efficient

In Canada all new heating systems must be high efficiency. Furnaces have to convert fuel to heat at the rate of 95% to be ENERGY STAR qualified. This measurement is represented by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE number on the EnerGuide label. Both Amana and Goodman brands include a wide variety of high efficiency models to choose from, ensuring you can find the perfect new solution for heating your Saskatoon home. You can learn more about individual models below (ignore the Standard Efficiency furnaces as those cannot be sold in Canada):

http://www.goodmanmfg.com/ResidentialProducts/GasFurnaces.aspx

http://www.amana-hac.com/products/gasfurnaces.aspx

Size Matters

An important consideration when selecting a new gas furnace is what size you need to heat your living space. The right sized furnace will work more efficiently, save you money and keep you cozy all year round (which is certainly key when living in Saskatoon, where the cold months outnumber the warm).

Furnace size is measured in BTUs/hour. It needs to correspond to the heat loss calculation of your home which is based on your square footage, materials used in its construction, venting, and so on. This is best calculated by a professional who comes to your house. At Centennial 360, furnace estimates are free.

Gas Valve Options

Amana and Goodman furnaces offer either one stage, two stage, or modulating gas valves. A single stage furnace will come on at full heat and blast as much heat into your home as its capacity allows. The problem with this is that a furnace is sized for the coldest day of the year, so most days your furnace will act as if it’s oversized and you will have uneven temperatures throughout your home. To correct this, many customers choose a two stage furnace, which will start at a lower heat setting and if the temperature hasn’t risen enough in a given timeframe it will then switch to full blast. Even better, Goodman and Amana offer a furnace with a modulating gas valve, which will most evenly heat your home every day of the year. Furnaces with modulating gas valves also tend to be quieter!

The Amana Furnace Advantage

One of the biggest differences between Goodman and Amana furnaces is that Amana has a stainless steel heat exchanger with a LIFETIME warranty. They are so confident about the heat exchanger that if it breaks, the whole furnace will be replaced, not just the heat exchanger. That is a pretty awesome guarantee.

Steve & Furnace

Installation is Key

Although Goodman and Amana make high quality furnaces and air conditioners, at the end of the day the most important thing about your furnace is its installation. Who you get to install your furnace plays a huge role in how well it will work for you and no one can beat Saskatoon’s heating professionals at Centennial 360.

Time for a New Water Heater
April 15, 2015
Have you been thinking about replacing your water heater? If you are debating on when is the right time to replace, the time is now! The USA regulations on water heaters are changing and are driving up prices of water heaters all over North America. As of June 1, 2015, water heater prices will rise significantly to accommodate these changes. On average a water heater lasts 12-15 years. If your water heater is reaching its later years, you may want to consider a spring replacement at a lower cost. If you would like a free quote on the installation of a new unit, call us at 306-222-8466 or book an appointment online. Hot Bath

Furnaces: To Replace or Not to Replace, That is the Question
January 5, 2015
Amana-Goodman-Furnace“You don’t know what you've got till it’s gone.” That saying has never been as true as it is when your furnace dies during the night in minus forty degree weather. It is at that moment when you start to appreciate that forgotten metal box in your basement. Suddenly your furnace is all you can think about and panic sets in as you worry about the safety of both your home and your family. The primary concern in a furnace emergency is to stay warm and get help. The secondary concern is the unexpected cost associated with the repair. If it is a simple fix then you can breathe a sigh of relief, but more often than not, the repair is a significant component of the furnace and you are left with a decision to repair or replace. Even if it is possible to fix the furnace, it might be time to “pull the plug”. You may be better advised to put your money toward a new unit instead of an expensive repair that may not last. Although you might not have any attachment to your furnace itself, you may have some attachment to the $5,000 - $7,000 you would have to dish out to replace it; it’s a difficult decision for anyone, especially under short notice. To help homeowners with their decision, Centennial 360 suggests three factors to consider: 1. Age of the Furnace “No matter how old the furnace is, replacement is always an option. In the earlier phases of a furnace’s life, repair is usually the preferred choice as parts may be under warranty and it is likely that the rest of the furnace is still in great shape. However, if it is fifteen years old or more, it is probably best to bite the bullet and replace. It likely won’t last too much longer even with a repair.” 2. The Weakest Link “As your furnace ages, something is bound to break. It’s the nature of anything that endures constant use. Think of your furnace as a chain of parts that are linked together. Eventually the weakest link will break. Once it is repaired, something else becomes the weakest link and it too will eventually give way. You can keep repairing broken links or you can get a new chain. Most of us fix a few links before we replace the chain, but keep in mind that the next link will break and a chain reaction will start.” 3. The E-Factor “If you are planning on staying in your home for a while, you will want to consider the efficiency factor. Everyone knows that a high efficiency furnace will save you money on your energy bill, but most people don’t realize that a new furnace with a brushless DC motor will also save you money on your power bill. According to SaskEnergy, switching from a standard furnace of 60% efficiency to a 95% high efficiency furnace saves the average Saskatchewan homeowner $509 per year. If your furnace is an energy guzzler, it’s probably best to replace.”  If you ARE  thinking of replacing your old furnace, now is a great time. From August 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015 SaskEnergy Network Members are offering Prime + 2% loans (OAC)  for ENERGY STAR® qualified high efficiency furnaces and other appliances.  Learn more here. And if you need more help deciding whether or not to replace your furnace, Centennial 360 offers  free estimates on furnace equipment. To Move or Renovate?
December 18, 2014
Infill Renovation Should we move or should we renovate? It’s a question that lingers at many households in Saskatoon. As a homeowner, it is likely you will one day face this question. You can weigh the pros and cons over and over again, but there is rarely a simple answer. In the end, there always seems to be one item that just can’t be compromised; it’s the decisive element, the non-negotiable, the deal breaker. For many homeowners that imperative piece to the puzzle is based on location and community. There are so many benefits to building in a new area, but for some, those benefits can never compare to the beauty of mature landscapes and a well developed community. Ron and Vicki Holmes were faced with the decision to move or renovate as their Montgomery home was finally in need of some updates. For them the decision was easy; they were not willing to part with their large yard and tight knit community. Ron and Vicki have a beautiful lot in a stunning neighbourhood and as empty nesters, it was simply time to make some improvements to the home they love. The renovation started as a simple faucet replacement. Just like the knee bone is connected to the shin bone, the faucet is connected to the sink which is connected to the counter which is connected to the cabinets, the floor, and the list goes on. What started out as a discussion of a faucet turned into a full renovation by Centennial 360 including a new kitchen, an updated powder room, replacement of the main level flooring, and even a new front door. Although this wasn’t the scale of project they initially had in mind, it was the perfect solution for Ron and Vicki. They accompanied their interior renovation with a new yard plan to create the perfect living space for their lifestyle. If renovating won’t give you your dream home, but you can’t imagine parting from your neighbourhood, there is yet another option for you. Infill builds have become increasingly popular in Saskatoon over the last ten years as the city has expanded. So much so, that Saskatoon city council approved a new infill strategy in 2013 with a goal of increasing residency inside of Circle Drive by 75,000 people. The Star Phoenix reported that since 2003, 21% of Saskatoon’s growth has come from infills in comparison to 5% between 1991 and 2001. Over the past three years, Centennial 360 has completed several infill builds and has seen a rise in interest for these kinds of projects. Owning land in Saskatoon is a valuable investment and if you have a property that needs more than a basic remodel, rebuilding on that lot may be your best option. It gives you the best of both worlds – your dream home in the neighbourhood you’ve grown to love. How do you know if you should renovate like Ron and Vicki or start from scratch with a new build? Start by asking yourselves a few questions and then explore your options. Your home is not only a financial investment, but it’s also an investment in your happiness. What will bring you the most joy and create the most moments of awesome in your life?

Home Renovation Fixation
November 19, 2014

Not every renovation ends at the expected completion time – and sometimes it is the homeowner who prolongs it. Once a homeowner gets going on one project, it tends to inspire him or her to expand the renovation to other rooms in the home. When one bathroom is updated, the others just don’t fit in anymore. Each room brings new ideas and possibilities and often what started as one small renovation or update turns into a whole home makeover.

Reno Fixation 1

Many of the homeowners who renovate with Centennial 360 have a renovation fixation – a design addiction or even obsession. The renovation process is contagious. Just like tattoos or Lay’s potato chips, once you have one, you feel compelled to have more. Warren and Karen Lucky are some of Centennial 360’s most decorated renovation clients. They started updating their home with their ensuite bathroom in January of 2012 and exactly one year later, they booked their second Centennial 360 bathroom renovation. The main bathroom design required relocation of their laundry and, therefore, small adjustments to their basement were completed as well. Their dream ensuite gave them a sweet tooth for more. They wanted the rest of their family and guests to enjoy the main bathroom as much as they enjoyed their ensuite. The second bathroom remodel was completed in spring of 2013 and by fall of 2014 the Luckys will be enjoying a new kitchen as well. Each project inspires Warren and Karen for the next and with each renovation they fall more in love with their home.

Reno Fixation 2Centennial 360 clients, Kevin and Carla, also faced a single project that turned into a myriad of renovations. An old broken hot tub needed to be removed and the hole in the ground instigated an entire basement remodel. Everything, including the ceiling and lighting, was transformed and a new wet bar was added to the stunning recreation room.

After a trip to the Bahamas, Carla was inspired by the Starbucks at the Atlantis resort to redo the basement bathroom with a wood feature wall. Knowing that the other bathrooms needed an update as well, Kevin and Carla decided to tackle two others at the same time. Their vision kept expanding and so did the renovations.

Even if you think you only want to upgrade one area of your house, take a look around and don’t be afraid to dream big. Whether you do one project at a time or complete it all at once, there is always value to living in a home that is right for you and your family. Before you know it, you may be the next to develop a renovation fixation.

5 Reasons You Should Tune Up or Replace Your Furnace Today
August 26, 2014
[gallery type="rectangular" link="none" ids="3873,1694"] With the summer sun still shining, the heating of your home may be the last thing on your mind. However, before the chilly autumn weather sets in, the smart money is on taking care of your furnace now. Why? Whether you are thinking of replacing your older inefficient heating system or giving your existing furnace a tune-up, here are five reasons to be an awesome early bird: 1. We live in Saskatchewan! It gets cold here, really cold and it can happen fast, unexpectedly and all too soon. Getting prepared for winter now just makes practical, prairie good sense. 2. Get a new furnace with a low interest loan. From August 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015 SaskEnergy Network Members are offering Prime + 2% loans for ENERGY STAR® qualified high efficiency furnaces and other appliances. You can too (OAC)! Learn more here. 3. Avoid unpleasant surprises. Don’t wait until you have to turn on your furnace for the first time in the season and find out there are problems. You don’t want to start the winter with no heat. 4. Beat the rush. Last year our service technicians got booked up very quickly. If you wait until the late fall/early winter, as so many people do, you may not be able to book a maintenance call until next spring. 5. Regular maintenance saves you money. By getting your heating system on a regular schedule for service, you ensure you are running the safest, most efficient furnace possible. A properly maintained heating system actually reduces your energy usage, which saves you money. Get a jump start on the fall with a Centennial 360 Furnace Tune-Up or book a FREE estimate for a brand new Amana or Goodman furnace! As an added bonus Centennial 360 is also offering an early bird special with $100 off Modine Hot Dawg Garage Heaters until September 28, 2014! Book a service call online, call us at 306.986.3246 or learn more about our heating and cooling services here

Corner of Awesome: Basement Renovation
April 10, 2014
Centennial 360 recently completed a basement renovation for Dr. Cynthia Nave and Terry Zakreski. These two busy professionals value health and fitness and wanted a usable home gym to make it easier to fit exercise into their schedules. Before the renovation they had their gym equipment in their unfinished basement, but it was not an inviting space. [caption id="attachment_3503" align="aligncenter" width="606"]Unfinished Basement - Before Unfinished Basement - Before[/caption] Terry and Cynthia had an idea of what they wanted when they came to Centennial 360. Our designer, Corinne Kaye, adjusted their original plan and moved the bedroom and bathroom to the opposite side of the basement which utilized the space much better and allowed for a higher ceiling in the bedroom. [gallery type="rectangular" ids="3514,3506,3505,3504"] Their 18 year old daughter now lives in that bedroom and has a massive walk in closet. [gallery type="rectangular" ids="3509,3508,3507"] The bathroom was designed with storage solutions so that everything could be put away keeping the counters clear. The deep soaker tub is their love! It was the biggest surprise of the renovation for them. None of them expected to use it as much as they do. [gallery type="rectangular" ids="3511,3512"] And they now also have the home gym of their dreams. Life doesn't get much more awesome than this! BREATH OF FRESH AIR
October 22, 2013
Love the name...love the paint color.  Benjamin Moore Color of the Year 2014 is 806 Breath of Fresh Air.  You know you want it. From Benjamin Moore: "The "New" Neutral Palette This palette is a reaction to all the colour cues that we have noticed popping up in the home furnishing industry... textiles, carpets, wallpapers, tabletops and pottery, as well as colour schemes that emerge in landscape design, the auto industry, fashion, and graphics. As colour rarely exists in isolation, we have designed a palette of 23 colours that work well together. There is harmony among the colours. There is an art to sequencing colour from one room to another—hallways are the arteries of the house, rooms radiate off the hallways and this palette helps the transition because the colours flow seamlessly. We've detected a 'lighter touch', hints, whispers, tints of colour. Shifts to pastels without looking too 'candy', too 'Easter egg' which is an exciting message for us, a colour company. We've begun to see a shift away from gray to tints of blues, greens, lavenders and pinks. Pastels, softened and filtered, to lift the spirit but not shout too loud... colors that can make a room happy, flatter your possessions and your art. We call these the new neutrals. These colours have proven to be flexible; pair Breath of Fresh Air 806 with Van Deusen Blue HC-156, you punch up a strong blue story. Pair it with Flint AF-560 and it transitions to a more sophisticated, more understated statement. Personal expression is the best expression. We are here to make the selection easier. You want to pick a colour that is enduring, resonates and is signature to your personal style. This is What Matters. This introduction is the beginning of our colour conversation for 2014. I invite you to explore the full Colour Trends 2014 Palette and our Colour of the Year Breath of Fresh Air. Make Life Awesome
September 10, 2013
Centennial 360 – Make Life Awesome. What does Centennial mean to you?  Concerts, a dreaded calculus class, plumbing, or maybe even a hotdog?  These are the things that come to mind in Saskatoon when we say Centennial.  We have been wrestling with the name dilemma for quite some time.  Usually we have had to qualify our name, Centennial, with the addition of the words plumbing, heating and electrical so people would know which Centennial we are speaking of.  The issue with that is we are so much more than plumbing, heating and electrical.  We are also full service renovations, design, custom home builders and a retail parts and fixtures showroom.  We really felt that we were selling ourselves short by using plumbing, heating and electrical to qualify our name.  We wanted a name that would encompass all that we are; it was time for a new branding. The name Centennial 360 was created to encapsulate every stage of the homeownership cycle. Clients can design their home, purchase product for their home, renovate or build their home all at Centennial 360. Our service team will help maintain the plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical components of the home until it is time to replace, renovate, or build again. It’s an ongoing cycle and Centennial 360 is there for homeowners full circle. At Centennial 360 we want to help Make Life Awesome by providing homeowners with safe, healthy, comfortable, and beautiful places to live. Welcome to the new Centennial 360: [gallery type="rectangular" ids="1555,1452,1562,1561,1106,1567,1566,1568,1442,1346,1353,1563,1056,1058,1565,1564,1080,982,171,116,1073,1076,860,149,151"]

May 16, 2013

Centennial is pleased to announce the April 2013 winner of the Centennial 12 in 12 Community Campaign - Child & Youth Friendly Saskatoon

Child and Youth Friendly Saskatoon

"Thank you very much Centennial, for creating this fund to benefit non-profit groups. Child & Youth Friendly Saskatoon is delighted to be the winner and to receive this gift today. The money will help us to meet some of the costs of our Youth Volunteer Summer Program. For 8 weeks we will have a team of approcimately 50 young volunteers helping out at around 23 different charities in our city.

Our team leaders will drive them to their various workplaces, where they could be serving meals or taking seniors for walks; they could be planting trees and shurbs for Meewasin Valley Authority; they could be exercising dogs, grooming cats or cleaning cages at the SPCA; helping with a house build at Habitat for Humanity; or delivering meals on wheels. Together they donate over 1,500 hours of volunteer work each summer, a valuable contribution at a time when regular volunteers are taking holidays or looking after their own children who are out of school.

This cheque will help us cover some of the costs of our activities and we thank you so much for your part in making our work possible."

Well for one you don't have clean around the toilet base anymore.  Yeah!!  It's wall hung, with the tank concealed in the wall leaving the floor open for easy cleaning. Being a mom of 3 boys this is reason enough for me to want one. If this is not reason enough for you- how about the price?  Featured in our new Centennial Look Book at $998 till March 9/13- you can't go wrong. I WONDER

EVER WONDER WHAT IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE? I'm not sure what we did before the days of computer aided drafting tools. I can imagine it went something like this: [caption id="attachment_1305" align="alignnone" width="300"]Model Kitchen Model Kitchen[/caption] Hmmm, model building?  I don't think I would be very good at that. What about Lego? [caption id="attachment_1307" align="alignnone" width="300"]Lego Lego[/caption] A red, yellow, green and blue kitchen might be a tough sell. OUR LAMINAM IS SHOWING
October 25, 2012
CENTENNIAL has LAMINAM Here's a sneak peek at our brand spanking new Laminam display featuring WetStyle furniture & baths [gallery] What is LAMINAM? Slabs are made in porcelain stoneware and produced with an innovative technology, by compacting the material and then firing it in an electric kiln at temperatures over approx. 1220 C, suitably designed to ensure the product evenness. The slabs manufactured in this way are perfectly flat and can later be cut or trimmed with total size accuracy. Basically, the highlight of the product is the size, 1000mm x 3000mm x 3mm. Other highlights:
  • · Lightness and high technical properties of Laminam make it suitable for floors & walls
  • · The slabs can be placed on top of each other or over other materials to create extremely light and particularly resistant composite and structural panels suitable in all those cases that require high resistance and reduced weight load on the surface
  • · Laminam resists to organic and inorganic solvents, disinfectants and detergents
  • · Can be easily cleaned without affecting its surface characteristics; the only product that can attack the slabs is hydrofluoric acid
  • · Highly scratchproof and resistant to deep abrasion. The properties of Laminam remain unchanged even after the intensive use and frequent cleaning
  • · Average water absorption is 0.1% therefore is frost resistant and suitable for any weather condition
  • · Does not contain organic material therefore it is resistant to fire and high temperatures. In the event of a fire, it does not release smoke or toxic substances
  • · Laminam is perfectly suitable for food substances since it does not release elements in solution. It does not allow the formation of mold, bacteria or fungi
  • · Does not contain organic pigments and is resistant to UV rays, even if subjected to severe climate changes, the color remains stable
  • · Laminam is the first graffiti proof product of its kind; even the strongest paints can be easily removed

AROUND THIS CORNER...
October 14, 2012
Vignette:  In theatrical script writing, sketch stories, and poetry, a vignette is a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or gives a trenchant impression about a character, idea, setting, or object. Some staff  in our showroom are aware of my aversion to using the word 'vignette' when referring to our showroom displays.  I just don't like the word.   It seems a bit pretentious and forced.   It may remind me of someone whom I don't care to remember and that's all I'll say.  (You know who you are.)  Anywhoo.. we have a really spectacular new DISPLAY set up that features a Neptune Kara overflow tub with all the bells & whistles.  The brand new Aquabrass Chicane roman tub faucet has been set on the tub deck.  We have cladded the tub in Moon Night granite compliments of Pristine Countertops. You really should stop by and see for yourself, cause you're gonna want to take it all home. [gallery]

I DARE YOU
October 5, 2012
FALL FOR FALL ORANGE Wouldn't it be nice to add major spice to your builder beige?  Nothing says daring as much as orange- the often left out cousin to red.  I would really like someone out there to request an orange bathroom or kitchen so that I may live out my orange fantasy through you.  I am having trouble convincing my significant other to love orange, so my house is off-limits.   I used to have a great orange suit jacket with gold trim no less.  Very 80's and very big shoulder pads.  I didn't wear it very often, I found people looking at me in weird ways when I did.  I often wonder what happened to that jacket after I donated it to the Salvation Army bin.  Did the guys unloading the treasure trove of goodies that week have a good laugh at my expense?  I don't like to think that they did.  I hope someone with way more fashion guts than me still pulls that old jacket out once and while- just to get a reaction. So come on you daring souls give me a call- we could make beautiful orange together. Corinne Kaye- Centennial Renovation Designer- Saskatoon [gallery]

Centennial is 45 years young and we've never looked better! The old adage that says the customer is always right, still holds true to us today.  If you are happy; we are happy.  Our humble beginnings as a do-it-yourself shop has morphed into a full service home renovation studio.  We have won many awards along the way from our peers but the most rewarding part of our day is still the one-on-one interaction we have with our clients.  Our goal is to improve the lives and homes of each and every client that walks through our doors. We are celebrating this Friday & Saturday September 28th and 29th- in our showroom.  Fabulous prizes to be won and fabulous new products to see. WHY CAN’T IT BE MINE?
September 5, 2012
We have just completed a beautiful bathroom renovation in a home that was built over 100 years ago.  This home has been in the same family since 1964- lots of history and memories.   A bit of a plumbing challenge for sure, but nothing we couldn't handle.  Our homeowners are very pleased with the final results and with the entire renovation process.  I do have to say the owner's are the nicest people you could ever meet and we are all thrilled that they are happy.  Their happiness makes us Happy!  Tyler was the lead technician on this project, with lots of plumbing help from John.  A perfect fit for this project- Tyler loves the history of the older homes and his attention to detail is second to none. DETAILS We moved the laundry out of the bathroom and into an adjacent spare bedroom.  We added a separate Fleurco shower & Azzura Adora soaker tub with a new larger vanity.  All the plumbing was upgraded to accommodate the new fixtures.   New Alterna flooring was installed and the walls were painted in Benjamin Moore color HC-147 Woodlawn Blue.  The tub tile surround is a Stone-Tile glass Vetro Listello in silver.  All faucets are from the Aquabrass collection.  All product used in this project is available at Centennial. OWED TO THE SASKATCHEWAN FARMERS
July 27, 2012
I am just about out of holiday days; back to work on Monday.  I mostly spent my 2 weeks at home enjoying my free time and enjoying my own home.  We have done quite a bit of work since purchasing it a few years ago.  There is still much to do but for the most part it was great to just stay home and enjoy.  We did take a quick trip to Calgary to visit with family.  I have driven on this road many times, most of the time in the driver's seat with no opportunity to really look around at what was passing by.  Because I get bored really quickly I decided to start photographing the farms that line the highway.  No small feat travelling at 120 km/h and really wanting to get home to see that the house is still standing after leaving the teenagers home alone for 4 days.  To the city girl who knows nothing about farming, the crops that were so carefully planted back in May are looking good to me.  At Centennial we have a large clientele of farmers from the Saskatoon area.  Seems that if the farmers have a good year, so do we. From Wikipedia: The economy of Saskatchewan has been associated with agriculture resulting in the moniker Bread Basket of Canada and Bread Basket of the World. According to the Government of Saskatchewan, approximately 95% of all items produced in Saskatchewan, depend on the basic resources available within the province. Various grains, livestock, oil and gas, potash, uranium, wood and their spin-off industries fuel the economy. On May 16, 2006, the Census of Agriculture  counted 44,329 farms in Saskatchewan.  Saskatchewan ranks first in Canada for cropland and summerfallow area with 43.0 million acres. This is a great BIG THANK YOU to all the Saskatchewan farmers who fuel our economy and allow the rest of us to enjoy our homes, careers and the occasional road trip to sneak a peek at what they are up to.  What a beautiful ride. PS. Our house was still standing and cleaner than when we left. Corinne Kaye- Centennial Renovation Studio Designer [gallery]

TIME TO SMILE
July 9, 2012
We received a wonderful letter from our clients, Carla & Darcy.  We have just completed a renovation of their home including the master ensuite, powder room, laundry room and some minor changes in the kitchen.  Design, products, project coordination and installation provided by the team at Centennial Renovation Studio. July 4th, 2012 Corinne Kaye Centennial Renovation Design 710 – 51st Street East Saskatoon, SK Dear Corinne: Carla and I wanted to more formally thank you for a “job well done” with the renovations of our home. We had heard many tales from friends and colleagues about renovation horrors, but truly did not live any of those unpleasant experiences throughout the process. We are most grateful for the expert guidance you provided. From the very beginning, Carla and I were impressed by your team’s professionalism and skill. We were always informed and kept abreast of your work; and you were always on time and on task. We wanted to especially pass on a special thank-you to Aaron. He treated our home like it was his own – there is no higher praise. Very much appreciated. If we had to do it again we would make our call to you, as we are very pleased with the final outcome. Your work has us smiling, and we know that will last for years to come. Three Story Tree Fort- That's Impressive
June 19, 2012
MEET MY RENO TECHS! Jason Hermanson Jason came to Centennial after spending many years self-employed in the home construction industry.  He has been a great asset to our company, he brings with him an ability to solve issues and think on his feet.  He always knows the way to get things done correctly.  He also brings his refreshing design side; his suggestions are usually spot on.   Jason has a quiet calm demeanor when going about his work day.  His skills as a renovation technician are very much appreciated by all his past clients, many of whom request his return for their next round of renovations.  Here are Jason's answers to my questions because enquiring minds want to know: What is your specialty? What talents do you bring? What is your experience? My specialty and talents is in the finishing details. I have worked in just about every field of the carpentry trade learning different techniques on how to make the finishing details 'pop'. Growing up with an artistic background, I can see the finished results long before we arrive to that stage and that helps things run smooth throughout any renovation. I have been working in the carpentry field since I was 18 but my first carpentry project was when I was around 12. I made a very large, 3 story tree fort that wrapped around about 6 trees! It still stands strong 17 years later! What do you like about working in the renovation department for Centennial? I enjoy everyone that is involved in the renovation process. There are so many people from the designer to everyone who does the ordering and delivering to the managers who make things work. It's a great group that works great together! What part of the renovation process is your favorite? My favorite part would be starting a new renovation and being part of it to see the finished result. Also being able to see and use new and unique products that make a statement in any project. What part of the renovation process is your least favorite? Unforeseen obstacles! It does happen; you deal with them and continue on. What is the number one thing you would advise homeowners to do prior to the start of their renovation? I think everyone has said it but ask questions. Make sure you understand what is going in and have patience. Renovations take time! Sometimes it feels as though progress is taking a while but trust me, it will be worth the wait to see the finished result! What is the number one thing you would advise homeowners to do during their renovation? Again like the other techs, be available to answer questions. And again be patient. Can you tell us about a Centennial project you are particularly proud of? And why? There has been a couple that have really stood out. First would be Harrison's kitchen, living room, dining room and basement. As well this year we did an amazing deck for them. Awesome couple to work with and a finished product that is just awesome! The second would Michael Shaw's kitchen. Again awesome results! Any funny or strange reno stories to tell? My funny stories usually end up with someone getting a hurt ego! Back when I was framing we had a guy that had to cut the sub floor around the stairwell on the second floor. Everything was going well until he finished the cut and realized that he was on the wrong side of the plywood that he just cut! He fell into the basement with no injuries other than his ego! Not A Fan of Lattice
June 12, 2012
Decks Just so you know- Centennial Renovation Studio builds decks.  We build stunning decks, decks that will have all the neighbors green with envy, we know this because they watch us build them and they looked kinda green to me.  There are two kinds of deck builds in Saskatoon as far as I can tell.  There are the 'just throw down some boards and fill it in with lattice' kind.  And there are the kind of decks that are actually designed to suit the landscape and have style to them.   The kind of deck that screams DECK PARTY!  These are the kind of decks Centennial builds.  We have just completed the most stunning deck composed of cedar privacy screens, composite decking and pressure treated underside.   This deck is the deck of all decks and not one bit of lattice to be seen.  If you are serious about your deck, then we need to talk.  I will show you what a real outdoor living space looks like.  Summer is short, enjoy it while you can. When will the rain stop? It's a great day to sit inside and listen to music cause we know we aren't going outside to sit on the deck, we're not golfing, we're not gardening, we're not picnicking, we're not walking the dog, we're not doing any of the summer weekend things we love to do.  I have compiled my list of favorite rainy day songs for everyone to enjoy.  Look them up on I-Tunes and have a listen.  Maybe it's a good day to have a look around your home and contemplate some renovation planning or maybe we could just get some laundry done.  And hey cheer up, Monday will be here soon enough. IT’S ALL IN THE NAMING
May 27, 2012
NEEDLE SHOWER ANYONE?  ANYONE?? We Canadians think we’re pretty advanced when it comes to our shower fixtures.  Seems most of what we thought was all new and exciting had already been done over 100 years ago.   A quick search unearthed some rare treasures from days past.  Of course our current versions have new technology such as thermostatic valves fitted with shiny chrome trims but the ideas are all the same.  Rain shower heads and body sprays- the very core of the therapeutic shower experience have been around for quite some time. The J.L. Mott Iron Works Company advertised some pretty amazing bathroom fixtures back in 1888.  One of the most intriguing fixtures is the Needle Shower said to have therapeutic virtues by offering pressurized liver, kidney, spinal and bidet sprays. The word ‘needle’ as it refers to showering or any other topic for that matter; doesn’t sound too appealing to me.  It’s no wonder it didn’t seem to really catch on.  Women were advised to stay away; the intensity of the water blast from a needle shower was considered harmful to the delicate women of the time. It seems it’s all in the naming, call it a Therapeutic Body Spray and we’ve got something here.  It’s been transformed into something more spectacular as time and technology advanced.  Everyone– including us delicate women need to experience the thrill of a full-blown shower spa.  Let me plan your next showering experience, sans the needles. ART CERAM- FOR ALL YOU MOVERS AND SHAKERS OUT THERE All the great 60's bands start with 'The'. 'Theartceram' is a new development that started in 2007 and consists of a selection of projects already part of the Art Ceram catalogue together with new collections from young designers with a new element. Paraphrasing Roddy Doyle's words : 'all the great products start with a the'. 'Theartceram' is a concept project, constantly evolving, about original, fresh and ambitious products, based on innovation.  Move into Theartceram! Art Ceram was founded in Civita Castellana in 1987. Their business started with the production of fitted washbasins for bathroom units and in 2000 it went on to become a company with its own identity thanks to the collaboration of international designers. A very important moment in the evolution of the company was the creation of the Fontana collection in 2006, a complete series of sanitary ware and furnishings based around a pedestal wash-basin. The perfect balance between function, innovation and development has helped the company grow internationally through the years. Constant technological research, investment in design and a focus on forecasting new trends, has confirmed the Art Ceram brand internationally. MEET MY RENO TECHS!
May 7, 2012
TYLER MINISH Tyler is so talented and shines so bright we should all be wearing shades when we look at him.  He likes things to be orderly and makes lists to ensure things are on track.  He is a very soft-spoken person who gets things done the right way by quietly asking for all the information he requires.  Most clients want to adopt him as their own.  Tyler also possesses a great talent for writing, as you will see by reading his answers to our questions. What is your specialty? What talents do you bring?  What is your experience? - I mainly do bathroom renovations, and I’d say my specialty is my creative eye, with an attention to detail.  I’m a journeyman plumber coming from a family background in construction: fine wood-workers, carpenters, and tradespersons.  I’ve been through several years university physics and completed 4th year studio sculpture.  I think I bring a very open-minded attitude to the table about what is possible (everything!), as well as what is practical (not everything), to meet the many special requests our customers and designers dream up. What do you like about working in the renovation department for Centennial? - I like solving problems in ways that others maybe hadn’t thought of yet.. ..creating unique solutions for unique problems gets me excited. What part of the renovation process is your favorite? - Getting to meet new and interesting people all the time.  And there’s this point I like, when a job is nearing completion - the customer’s excitement becomes obvious about finally getting to enjoy their new tub, custom shower, steam unit, in-floor heat, or whatever the case may be.  Bubbly customers always make my day. What part of the renovation process is your least favorite? - Having to say goodbye.  It may sound cheesy, but there are two sides to any coin, and it can be a bummer when a big project ends, and there's been good rapport with a customer. What is the number one thing you would advise homeowners to do prior to the start of their renovation? - Be 100% certain you know what you want, with as much detail and clarity as possible.  "Measure twice, cut once".  Making design decisions on-the-fly is rarely a good idea – and if you haven’t done a renovation before, you’ll need to do some serious sit-down thinking.  Designers can help you with this process, from minor suggestions at one end, to a complete make-over at the other.   Be prepared to see your initial plan through to the very end, (if you’re not prepared to take on additional costs). What is the number one thing you would advise homeowners to do during their renovation? - Make sure you’ll be available to answer questions, one way or another, (by phone, email, or in person), to keep your renovation running smoothly, and to your liking.  I'm willing to take photos and email them from my Blackberry to communicate a visual concern/question, (a picture really is worth a thousand words), so make sure these avenues are available if you want to take advantage of them. Can you tell us about a Centennial project you are particularly proud of?  And why? - McKee’s:  This was a huge 2-bathroom project, in size and scope. Their en-suite bathroom was completely gutted, from the floor joists up to the ceiling, and all plumbing and electrical in between.  Then it went from major plumbing & electrical changes, on through carpentry to a tiled double shower with custom glass enclosure, which flowed into the deck for an over-sized jetted tub.  This was all complemented by in-floor-heat, a privacy glass wall for the toilet, and a double vanity with customer-planned lighting.  I’m proud to have been involved in all steps along the way, and performed the greater majority of the work.  It’s very satisfying to build such a jaw-dropping space and I must give special thanks to Kathleen, Bob, and the many others who were also involved in completing this huge undertaking, (Ryan, John, Jason, Doug, Heather, Hugo, Jaime, Elaine, Grant, Ed & Brent).  And a big thanks to the McKee's for the kind hospitality and patience throughout this process, and for getting back to me, during their own busy workdays, when I had bizarre questions about grout-line or water-way locations. Any funny or strange reno stories to tell? - Not so much funny as just fondly memorable:  We did this basement development for an out-of-town customer.  Every day that Chris happened to be home for lunch, he would prepare a veritable feast, (and wouldn’t “allow” us to eat our pathetic sandwiches if we’d brought any).  A couple of times there was pizza, (if he was busy that day), but most of the time it was something like finely prepared broiled chicken breasts with rice and pan-seared veggies, or BBQ prime rib and lemon-herb-roast potatoes, or any number of other mouth-watering delicacies.  We had a hard time getting back onto our feet after lunch, (can I have a nap now?), but always looked forward to his next masterpiece.  Thanks Chris, for your endless generosity and for sharing your great culinary skills..  ! The COUTURE collection induces the bather to immerse willingly in a graceful design dedicated entirely to sensual pleasure. The bathtub draws its inspiration from the fluted perfection of the seashells dotting the ocean floor. The shape, splendidly smooth on the inside and ribbed on the outside, is modernity made material. Meet My Reno Techs!
April 28, 2012
COLLIN JENKINS Collin has performed many renovations during his time with Centennial.  He is one of those people who just go and go, kinda like the pink bunny.  He brings his people skills and very upbeat attitude to every job site.  Clients love Collin for his sense of humor, his attention to detail and his happy personality.  While he claims to have no color sense he does pack his own Benjamin Moore paint sample kit- hmm, makes me wonder if there’s a designer hiding in him somewhere?   We asked Collin to answer a few questions about his life with Centennial.  He seemed more than willing to share his answers with us. What is your specialty? What talents do you bring?  What is your experience? I would say my specialty is being able to deal with all types of people and understand their concerns.  My talents are many- from drywall to intricate tile installations.   I have been in the construction field for 15 years. What do you like about working in the renovation department for Centennial? I enjoy the people I work with and the support I receive from co-workers is great. What part of the renovation process is your favorite?  I would say my favorite part is seeing the happy faces of our customers when I have completed their renovation. What part of the renovation process is your least favorite? When I ask Bob (our reno manager) a seemingly complicated question that turns out to have an obvious answer that I just didn’t see in that moment. What is the number one thing you would advise homeowners to do prior to the start of their renovation? I would always advise homeowners to get a designer to help with what they are thinking they want.  Put the plan on paper so there is no mistake about what the plan is. What is the number one thing you would advise homeowners to do during their renovation? Always ask loads of questions. Can you tell us about a Centennial project you are particularly proud of?  And why? I have two: The Royal University Hospital maternity ward lounge bathroom because the designer had picked sweet products and it looked great. The Isbisters basement project- a complete rebuild of a basement from an un-livable space to a great livable space. Any funny or strange reno stories to tell? Watching one of our plumbers get a bit of a mess on himself after someone flushed an upstairs toilet while he was repairing the main drain stack in the basement. [slideshow]

Spring Heat
April 25, 2012
Yeah its spring! Even though we may all be thinking of the warmer weather approaching I can't help myself I still have to show the Kontour line of towel warmers.  A couple in particular that are very different from the norm- the Line and the Edge.  Every bathroom should have one! Express your creativity with Line and Edge rails from Kontour that provide you with a clean minimalistic look that can easily harmonize with the rest of your bathroom fittings. These 12 volt powered warmers can be mounted horizontally and be grouped in any pattern, quantity or configuration. Line and Edge warmers can be perfectly matched to the particular design theme of your bathroom, whether that be cutting edge, modern, classic or elegant. Light My Fire
April 20, 2012
Featured Supplier: Brasa Fire Brasa is a New Orleans Based design and engineering company. We are devoted to creating new and innovative ways to bring the warmth and beauty of fire into as many facts of home life as we can think of. New Orleans is full of charming old buildings and the people have a lot of character too. We make our homes in the old Shotgun Houses, Camel-backs, Creole cottages, re-purposed turn of the century industrial warehouses, converted houses of worship, and even a few stately mansions, anything with four walls and a roof and some personality suits us just fine. But these charming abodes don’t always come insulated from the elements, and if they ever had chimneys, they likely stopped working years ago. So we have to be creative, and find ways to experience real fire in our quirky homes on chilly winter nights (yes, it really does get brisk here for a few months, just long enough to inspire us to create fires for our friends in chillier climates). Our Philosophy of Fire: we believe that fire should go where the people go – not fixed in a single location stuck into the wall – chained to a chimney. A good party may well often start in the living room and end up in the kitchen, but just in case it doesn’t, your Brasa will follow the crowd out onto the deck, the rooftop, the dining room or the rec room (in case you happen to live in the 70’s and still have one of those). We also love things to be green and clean – and the thought of blowing soot around the house just seems wrong to us. So we design fire features that run on renewable denatured alcohol fuel – from plants and vegetables. Brasa is all about finding new ways to do old things, while still blending in with tradition. Our goal is to design products that enhance your home décor – even when they are not lit. And we love to see flames coming out of unexpected objects. We have pioneered an entire line of spill proof, ground breaking burner technology that enables us to do just that. Brasa. Design enthusiasts. Innovators of Fire. It's the Little Things
April 18, 2012
Featured Supplier: Smedbo 1967 The forgotten room The bathroom of the 1960´s reflected the austere times of the decades before. Fashion had yet to dictate that a bathroom should be any more than basic and simple. As a result bathrooms were stark and dull, easy to care for but with little attention paid to aesthetics and style – a forgotten room. In 1967 Smedbo was incorporated. The new company was founded on the traditional principles of craftsmanship of the highest level. Beautifully forged items were produced and in that first year Smedbo unveiled the first bathroom accessories (Herrgård), in a period when people were beginning to realize that a bathroom could be stylish and modern. Smedbo’s new line of decorative hardware in solid brass featuring fine detail captured the market’s imagination and helped to ensure that the bathroom would no longer be the most neglected room in the home. With this new range classic Scandinavian design values, the tradition of craftsmanship and the beauty of brass united. The new bathroom range from Smedbo enjoyed great success amongst the Swedish house holds. The ‘forgotten’ room would be forgotten no more. A battery backup pump and water level sensor will alert a homeowner if there is a concern with the functionality of the sump pump before any damage has occurred.
